About this test

The NarcoCheck® IDetect® K3 is a rapid test for the detection of synthetic cannabinoids of the PINACABINACA, BUTINACAFUBINACA, etc., types in plant samples (used as cannabis cutting products), powders, liquids and surfaces.

K3s are the most common synthetic cannabinoids currently in circulation. This class of synthetic cannabinoids is found in particular in adulterated cannabis weeds or resins, but also in certain e-liquids

The NarcoCheck® IDetect® K3 can be used in different ways:

  • To detect the presence of K3 synthetic cannabinoids in plant material, particularly cannabis and CBD flowers. Simply place a few milligrams of the sample to be tested into the provided tube, which contains a diluent specifically designed for the extraction of K3-type molecules. The test then delivers a positive or negative result.

  • To detect the presence of synthetic K3 cannabinoids in solids and liquids (including e-liquids/vape liquids). Simply collect a few milligrams/microliters of the substance to be tested. The test then clearly indicates whether the sample contains K3, with a positive or negative result.

  • To detect and identify residues of synthetic K3 cannabinoids on surfaces and all types of objects, using the swab provided in the kit.

Also called synthetic cannabinoids presence test or synthetic cannabinoids contamination test, this detection kit can be used anywhere, easily and in a few minutes.

    Frequently asked questions

This practice is unfortunately becoming increasingly common, for several reasons:

    Maximization of profits

Synthetic cannabinoids are less expensive to produce than natural THC. By spraying a solution of K3 onto CBD flowers (which are much less expensive than THC-rich cannabis), traffickers can sell these products as "potent cannabis," while reducing production costs.

    Artificial enhancement of potency

Synthetic cannabinoids, such as those from the K3 family, are often much more potent than natural THC, resulting in a more intense and rapid effect, which can mislead consumers into believing they are purchasing a superior quality product.

    Avoidance of regulatory controls

In some countries where cannabis is illegal but CBD is permitted, certain unscrupulous professionals use synthetic cannabinoids to impart a psychoactive effect to CBD flowers. These adulterated CBD flowers, which are much more potent than typical CBD flowers, thus enable better consumer retention while remaining difficult to detect by standard tests.

Synthetic cannabinoids are extremely dangerous, as they interact differently with the brain's cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) and have effects that are far more potent and unpredictable than natural THC.

    Serious and unpredictable side effects

    • Panic attacks, extreme anxiety, hallucinations.
    • Tachycardia, hypertension, heart palpitations that may lead to cardiovascular complications.
    • Disorientation, memory loss, paranoia.

    High risk of overdose

    • Unlike natural THC, which acts partially on CB1 receptors, synthetic cannabinoids bind more strongly, causing much more potent effects that can lead to an overdose.
    • Consumers cannot accurately dose the substance, and even a small amount can result in severe intoxication.

    Seizures and convulsions

Several cases of convulsions, muscle spasms and even cardiac arrests have been reported following the consumption of cannabis adulterated with K3.

    Long-lasting psychiatric disorders

Some consumers have developed prolonged psychoses, episodes of persistent paranoia, or mood disorders after a single exposure to K3.

No, this test is specific to K3, that is, synthetic cannabinoids of the Pinaca type and its derivatives (BICA, BINACA, BUTINACA, CHMICA, CHMINACA, FUBICA, FUBINACA, INACA, etc.).

However, it can be supplemented by a chemical test for synthetic cannabinoids of the K2 type, such as JWH, AM, CP, etc.

K2 was the first class of synthetic cannabinoids to appear. Known as “Spice,” it enjoyed immense popularity between 2008 and 2012, largely due to molecules such as JWH-018, JWH-073, AM-2201, and CP 47,497. It is still found today, but in much smaller quantities compared to K3.

K3 emerged in the early 2010s and saw a sharp rise in popularity between 2013 and 2016. Since then, its popularity has continued to grow, and K3 now accounts for the vast majority of the market and of synthetic cannabinoid seizures. The K3 class includes all molecules of the Pinaca, Fubinaca, Butinaca, etc.

K4 refers to UR-144, a synthetic cannabinoid that appeared in 2011–2012. It enjoyed immense popularity until 2015. Since then, it has been largely replaced by K3. It is rarely found today.

    IMPORTANT

This test is a professional device used to help identify presumptive drugs or narcotics in the form of powders (fine or agglomerated), crystals, tablets, or some specific plants. It is not designed to test "anything and everything" (food, beverages, biological materials etc.), and particularly everyday products (household, gardening, cosmetics etc.) which contain various chemical compounds that can trigger unexpected reactions, and thus cause false or erroneous results.

Like any rapid test, this test delivers a purely indicative result. To know or confirm with certainty the composition of the sample, it is necessary to analyze it with a reference analytical method such as GC/MS or HPLC-MS/MS. The use of this test must therefore be done with full knowledge of the fact that no rapid screening test can be 100% reliable.
