About this test
The NarcoCheck® DXM rapid test strip is an immunoassay for the fast detection of Dextromethorphan use in human urine.
Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant found in various cough syrups and lozenges.
In medical practice, this active ingredient relieves dry coughs by blocking the cough reflex in the brain. It is sold without a prescription, often combined with sugary excipients, and used for short periods of time.
Misuse: In high doses, some teenagers and young adults misuse DXM for its psychotropic potential. Taken in large quantities, it causes feelings of dissociation, hallucinations, and euphoria. Recreational use, known as “robo-tripping,” is growing via the internet and concerts.
Overdoses can cause agitation, nausea, heart problems and, when combined with alcohol or certain antidepressants, a potentially serious serotonin syndrome.
